War Produces Medical Miracles: Who Gets to Use Them?    

Like other wars, the war in Iraq has produced its share of medical miracles that help repay the sacrifices made by wounded veterans. But some involve high technology that is very expensive. We hear about some developments, who pays to make it available and how it's decided which veterans qualify.  On Reporter's Notebook, a film festival devoted to celebrating the successes and sacrifices of American soldiers.

Fort Worth, Texas – During special ceremonies on Saturday, October 11, 2008, at Sky Ball VI, an annual event hosted at Alliance Field by American Airlines and the Fort Worth Airpower Foundation - and through the efforts of the Lakeway Patriot Fund Committee (LPF) and America’s Huey 091 Foundation (091) - iBOT Mobility Systems number sixteen and seventeen were presented to wounded warriors Elias Reyes, US Army, and CW4 Gary Linfoot, US Army.

 Army Sgt Manuel Mendoza was injured in Iraq on October 3, 2004, by a roadside blast from an improvised explosive device that caused a vehicle rollover, resulting in the loss of his two legs.

On December 13, 2004, USCIS Director Eduardo Aguirre swore in Sgt Mendoza as a United States citizen in a private ceremony at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. Surrounded by his family, senior Army officials, and many of the doctors, nurses, and medical staff treating him for serious injuries sustained in combat in Iraq, Sgt. Mendoza raised his right hand to take the Oath of Allegiance to fulfill his long held dream of becoming a U.S. citizen.

The event raised nearly 700k and will be used to benefit Purple Heart Recipients from OIF/OEF. We had 10 iBOT recipients, all of whom were Wounded Service Members attend the event.

OC Register: Army veteran skydives onto golf course

HERO: Double amputee and retired Army Ranger Dana Bowman waves to the crowd after making a perfect landing onto the golf course at Arroyo Trabuco Golf Club in Mission Viejo to kick off the Operation Homefront Golf Classic. The event raises money to provide emergency assistance and morale to the troops, their families and to the returning wounded.
